Who is your favourite teacher? Many of us can think of teachers who have been really good to us, are kind and funny, make subjects interesting and take extra time to help us when we are struggling. Did you know that one of the titles that Jesus was given was ‘Rabbi’, or ‘Teacher’? Thousands of people of different ages, jobs and communities went to hear Jesus teach. What drew such big crowds? What made Jesus such a great teacher?
The subjects Jesus talked about are universal. That means, he spoke about things that matter to everyone and affect all of us at some time. Jesus talked about love, life, death, marriage, worry, money and power. Jesus spoke to young and old, rich and poor, those in power and those who disliked those in power. He spoke to people from his own Jewish background, and those who weren’t Jews.
Jesus’ teaching wasn’t always popular especially with the religious leaders of the day. Many couldn’t understand how a young man from a fairly poor background could have such wisdom and knowledge, and they didn’t like being challenged by some of the things Jesus said about the way they behaved.
However, many did hear and welcomed Jesus’ teaching and sought to follow it. Jesus’ teaching is recorded in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and for Christians it helps them better understand what God is like and how they can best live their lives to please Him.
This section contains articles on some of the topics Jesus spoke about and how Christians apply it today. You might discover some sayings you recognize, such as “Do to others as you would have them do to you”. Can you track down where in the Bible this teaching comes from?Bookmark
