Do you like drawing or painting? Do you like to sing or play an instrument? Perhaps you create sounds and songs of your own, or write poetry or prose. If so, what inspires you? People? Nature? Problems in the world which drive you to speak out? Emotions – of love, joy or anger?
For centuries, religion and art have been closely intertwined. People’s faith has motivated them to create something beautiful – whether that is a piece of music, painting, sculpture, poetry or architecture – as a way of expressing their own feelings about God, or helping others to connect with God. Some of the defining stories found in the Bible – for example of Adam and Eve, King David, or Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection – have provided the inspiration for paintings, sculptures and choral works, amongst many others. Some of our greatest buildings are historically places of worship, elaborately and beautifully designed in order to glorify or celebrate God.
This section provides articles and films about the role art plays in the life of the church – for example, how and why music is regularly used in worship – as well as providing interviews with Christian artists who see their talent as a gift from God, to be used for Him. You will also find out about the way art has been used to share the Christian story over history. How many works of art with a Christian connection do you know? Can you find it here?
