Calling

Does God have a plan for each of us?

Does God have a plan for our lives? Christians would say yes. They would say that God has ‘called’ us – invited us – to an exciting and unique life with Him.

God’s plans don’t start with what we do with our lives. They start with who we are. The Bible says that:

“Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love, to be made whole and holy by His love. Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 1:4-5)

In other words, the first ‘call’ on somebody’s life is to know God’s love for them and become part of God’s big family.

The second important ‘call’ is to live a righteous life – in other words, living in a ‘right’ way with God and other people. The Bible says that:

“We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2: 10)

What does this mean? It means that we live in a world that doesn’t run as God intended – where people often hurt others and don’t treat people fairly. God ‘calls’ people to do good to others, to help make the world a better place. The Bible teaches that God has given people gifts and talents to use for Him, to do these good works. Jesus told a parable about this in Matthew 25:14-30. Sometimes, the best way to discover what God has called us to do is to think about what we love to do. God made us that way for a reason!

But does God have particular plans for each person? Does He tell us what job to do, or who to marry? Some Christians believe God has given them clear signs on these big questions, either through verses in the Bible, or important conversations with people they trust, or just a feeling that it is the right thing to do. You can find an example of one Christian’s story of their calling here.
