The First Pope
Saint Peter, formally Simon, was renamed by Jesus – a sign that Peter was going to be one of the founders of the Christian Church.
Peter was one of Jesus’ closest friends and disciples – he followed Jesus with enthusiasm and zeal. However, he sometimes got it wrong. Jesus showed him that even though Peter might make mistakes, Jesus still loved him.
Roman Catholics regard Peter as the first Bishop of Rome, or as the role is more commonly known, the Pope.
