Questions

This is a fun starter activity or illustration to introduce students to why Christians trust God to guide them.

Preparation: Find a big, simple poster of something appealing, e.g. a popular cartoon or band. Mount this onto card and then cut it up to make a big jigsaw.

Required resources: Homemade jigsaw, big board, blu-tac, blindfold

Ask for a volunteer who’s good at jigsaws. Show them the jigsaw. Before they can begin, however, blindfold them! Ask them how confident they feel now?!

Find another volunteer who is willing to direct them as they try to put the pieces onto the big board. Let them do it between them: with one being the eyes, the other being the hands. To make it into a competition, you could time trial this with several volunteers.

Teaching point

People can sometimes feel that we ‘do life’ blind. We don’t always understand what’s going on, or why we’re doing things, or where we’re meant to go. Sometimes we don’t know who we are or who we’re meant to be.

But Christians believe that God is able to see the big picture – how all the elements of our life fit together. They trust in his promises found in the Bible – one popular Bible verse is found in the Old Testament:

‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ (Jeremiah 29:11).

For Christians, faith is a matter of trusting that God is real and is in control, even when they can only see a small part of the picture, and trusting in the guidance he gives: through the Bible, through the Church and through His own voice speaking to believers.
