Breaking the Chain by Darren Richards

Book review

This modern day parable, set in a prison, tells the story of two men Ken, an older and wiser man, and Josh, a young fiery character.

Ken had a happy life. But then he found out a secret that changed everything. Now he is in prison for murder. Josh is new in prison. He doesn’t think he should be there and is not slow in letting people know.

When the two men meet, Ken tells Josh his life story and as this unfolds his secret is also revealed. Could this be the key to their freedom or is the truth just too hard for them to cope with?

At the end of each chapter ‘Breaking the Chain’ has some thought provoking questions that make this an ideal book to use within a PSHE or SMSC lesson with older children. With its parallels to the teaching on sacrifice as found in the Bible, “Breaking the Chain’ could also be used as part of RE or RME.
