Charity: Ripple Effect
How does Ripple Effect help the poor in Africa?
Ripple Effect (formerly Send a Cow) has a big vision: it seeks to give communities and families in Africa the hope and the means to secure their own futures from the land. The organisation works hand in hand with poor families teaching them the skills they need to build new lives free from poverty and hunger. By providing training, livestock, seeds, and support, Ripple Effect restores hope and creates stronger communities for the future.
The story however does not stop there. The families who have received the help then pass on young livestock, seeds or training to others. A process that then continues, thus benefiting large numbers of families and communities. This ‘Pass it On’ principle not only builds stronger communities, but it also allows the organisation to help even more people to develop skills, confidence, and self-respect.
Hence the name; Ripple Effect!
Ripple Effect does not claim to offer a quick-fix solution to poverty and rural development. Instead, the organisation is in it for the long- haul establishing long-term sustainable solutions to the issues of poverty and hunger.
Typically, the organisation works with groups of farmers for five years to effect substantial and sustainable change. Ripple Effect also acknowledges the fact that issues such as gender equality, health and family harmony are just as vital to the success of development programmes in Africa as simple livestock provision.
So besides ongoing training in animal wellbeing, sustainable organic farming practices and natural resource management, their work also provides courses in subjects such as gender equality, conflict resolution, health and hygiene and HIV/Aids awareness. This balance of practical farming skills with social and life skills produces remarkable results. People are happier and healthier, children are educated, wealth is created and communities are more harmonious.
