Charity: Send a Cow

Christianity in action, helping the poor...

Send a Cow’s main vision is to give communities and families in Africa the hope and the ability to produce plenty of food. The organisation works hand in hand with poor families teaching them the skills they need to build new lives free from poverty and hunger. As part of this, they provide training, farm animals, seeds, and support. The story does not stop there. The families who have received the help then pass on young farm animals, seeds or training to others. A process that then continues. This helps large numbers of families and communities.

This ‘Pass it On’ principle not only builds stronger communities, but it also allows the organisation to help even more people to develop skills, confidence, and self-respect. Send a Cow does not offer a quick-fix solution to poverty and rural development. Instead, it wants to work with people for many years, so that the things they do to improve things can last for a long time. This is known as long-term sustainability.

Typically, the organisation works with groups of farmers for five years. As well as training in animal wellbeing, organic farming, and natural resource management, their work includes teaching on equality, conflict resolution, and healthy living. This balance of practical farming skills with social and life skills means that people are happier and healthier, children are educated, wealth is created and communities live in peace.
