Bible Quest: The Exile to Babylon

Why were the Israelites taken into slavery?

Israel had lots of kings. Some of the kings led the Israelites well and helped them to follow God. But other kings were bad and didn't follow God. The prophets warned them that they should change their ways. When they didn't, their land was taken over by their enemy. They were forced to move to a new city called Babylon.

They lived there in exile for around 70 years, where they were kept as slaves. Eventually, Babylon was conquered by the Persian Empire. The Persians allowed the Israelites to return to Israel.
