Christian Teachings on Equality

All Christians believe that humans are equal. They hold this view for a number of reasons, mostly connected to the Bible. The Bible is very clear in its teaching about the importance of equality.

1) All Are Equal

A key text that is often referred to from the New Testament is:

It is through faith that all of you are God's children in union with Christ Jesus. You were baptised into union with Christ, and now you are clothed, so to speak, with the life of Christ himself. So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free people, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are the descendants of Abraham and will receive what God has promised.'

Galatians 3:26-29

This makes it clear that there is no difference between people, whatever their gender, race or religious beliefs: all are the same.

2) Made in God's Image

God made everyone in his image. Nobody is better than anyone else and God doesn't have favourites. In Galatians 2:6 we read:

'As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message.'

3) Parable of the Good Samaritan

This parable teaches people to care for everyone equally, not to just look after people from their own culture. You can find out more about this parable here.

4) The Example of Jesus

Jesus made a point of reaching out to those who were believed to be of lower status. He helped the poor, lepers, and criminals. He treated everyone he met with love, kindness, and respect, treating them as equals.
