The Trinity

Why is it important to Christians?

The Trinity: The Christian belief that there is One God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The word 'Trinity' is derived from the term 'tri-unity': 'three-in-one.' All Christians believe in the Trinity, but it is important to understand that this does not mean that Christians believe in three gods; they do not. Christianity is a monotheistic religion, which means Christians believe in One God who exists as three persons:

The Importance of the Trinity

The Trinity is important to Christians because through each person they can get a better understanding of what God is like. For example, Jesus' teachings help them to understand the things that are important to God, such as loving and praying for enemies and helping the poor.

Christians believe that each person within the Trinity is important. They each have clearly distinct roles, each equally important. They work in unity together to bring about God's will on earth. This unity and equality can be seen in the following Bible verses:

At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.But John tried to make him change his mind. “I ought to be baptized by you,” John said, “and yet you have come to me!” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So John agreed. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.” Matthew 3:13-17
